Clark Door can trace its origins back to a timber merchant in Cranford, New Jersey, U.S.A in the late 1800's.The company developed and expanded into manufacturing doors, primarily Temperature Controlled Doors for the Cold Storage Industry. By the 1950's the company had 3 manufacturing sites in the U.S.A. with later operations in Canada, Sweden and South Africa.
In 1973 Clark Door Limited was formed as a joint venture between Clark Door Incorporated of the U.S.A and Christian Salvesen PLC now owned by Norbert Dentressangle. The factory began manufacturing coldstore doors for the frozen food distribution industry.
In 1990 Christian Salvesen bought the 50% of Clark Door Limited from its U.S.A part owner and Clark Door became a wholly owned subsidiary company. In September 1991 Paul Ashley led a Management Buy Out initially partnering with 3 I’s (Investors In Industry). Today, Clark Door Ltd is a family business led by father & son Paul Ashley, Chairman, and Andrew Ashley, Managing Director, both qualified engineers with a passion for excellence
New Factory – 2005
On 8 January 2005 Clark Door Limited along with much of Carlisle suffered a catastrophic flood with its Carlisle factory being submerged in 7 feet of water.
Thanks to the efforts of the company's employees, Clark Door was able to fulfil its orders and quickly relocate to a new facility in Carlisle, on higher ground!
State of the art
From a blank canvas our new facility has been completely re-equipped with brand new state of the art manufacturing and IT equipment with £millions of investment. The 30,000 square foot single level facility is set up to enable the business to meet customer requirements in designing and manufacturing increasingly specialised and sophisticated range of industrial doors.
Owing to expansion in the factory facility it became necessary to add separate offices to the outer building in 2007.
Queen's Honours List
In Her Majesty the Queen's New Year Honours list of January 2011 Clark Door's Chairman Paul Ashley receives an MBE.
