Case Study Description

WATG sought to design a world-class opera house suitable for royalty, incorporating a 1000-seat concert theatre and auditorium, befitting of the local culture of Muscat and in the style of a modern Omani Palace.

Clark Door has a long heritage in providing large special purpose acoustic fire-rated sliding doors for arts centres, theatres and opera houses, not least of which for the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.

The design team and contractor from the Royal Opera House, Muscat contacted Clark Door to find out if we could provide large high specification acoustic fire-rated doors for their specific requirements that would be in keeping with this prestigious opera house. After understanding the specification, the Clark Door design team sent drawings for approval but also carried out a detailed site survey to ensure that all site conditions were taken into account prior to commencing manufacture.

The Clark Door engineering team’s attention to detail ensured that when the doors were shipped to Oman they were installed and commissioned in an efficient manner in the heart of the theatre space within the building, on time and before the completion of the decorative finishes to the internal parts of the building.

The image below shows the later stages of installation of a power operated Clark vertical sliding door, measuring 6.5m wide by 3.5m high. This particular acoustic door was fitted on the side of the stage area, to be open for loading purposes but provide noise insulation to the outside environment during the sort of performances you would expect in Muscat’s prestigious Royal Opera House. The Clark Door designs on this project met the individual Rw45dB noise requirement and 60min fire rating.
