Apprentice Design Engineer
Why did you select this career?
I always wanted a hands-on career. Whilst looking at joining the Royal Navy as a Mechanical Engineer, I discovered Clark Door were offering a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship.
Fortunately, I was accepted on to the four-year Level 3 programme at Clark Door in 2019.
Where did you start and where are you now?
I started on the workshop floor, developing welding and fabrication skills over a two-year period.
Whilst continuing the Level 3 Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship and HNC, I was given the opportunity to train as a CAD designer.
Experience in the factory has helped me quickly develop CAD design skills.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Projects are located all over the world, which makes the variety of projects and type of clients really interesting.
As a CAD Designer, I am able develop an initial design, then monitor it through manufacture – it’s satisfying seeing your design as a finished product.
The working environment is enjoyable and help or guidance is always there if I need it.

Electrical Engineering Manager
Why did you select this career?
When leaving school, I was looking for a life long trade that was commercially focused and also involved additional brain power.
An Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship at Clark Door appealed as it ticked both of these requirements.
Where did you start and where are you now?
My Apprenticeship started in the Final Assembly department, to gain the mechanical skills required. Over four years I was able to complete experience across all departments.
With four years as an Electrical Project Engineer and six years as a Senior Electrical Engineer, I was promoted to Electrical Engineering Manager in 2022.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
From selecting the right people to creating an environment where people can work to the best of their ability, building a high performing team is something I am passionate about.
Although I’m a manager, I still get to use all of my technical experience day to day, which is something I still get a lot of satisfaction from.

Engineering Manager
Why did you select this career?
Hailing from Gloucestershire, I studied Engineering at Cheltenham Technical College and Lanchester Polytechnic. Admiring all fields of engineering, site work and being out on the road was something that appealed.
After working in the engineering industry as an Installation Engineer of architectural steelwork all over the UK, I joined Clark Door in 1988.
Where did you start and where are you now?
For the first twelve years I was an Installation Engineer. After supervisory and management roles specialising in Lean Management, I became Engineering Manager in 2006 and NEBOSH Construction qualified.
Over the years I have worked across the USA & Europe as well as many other destinations. From sub-zero temperatures of the Arctic Circle, to the soaring heat of the Middle East – I have been able to travel the world with Clark Door.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Seeing projects through from design phase to completion, experiencing great technical and logistical achievements. Recent examples include massive doors at Crossrail and Urenco – both at elevated positions. International project highlights have included spectacular buildings, such as the Royal Opera House Muscat and Doha Convention Center.
The selection, management and training of individuals is also fulfilling for me personally. Ensuring our team develop their skills and progress within the company is a feeling that can’t be matched.

APPRENTICE
Fabricator Welder
The fabrication and welding industry is embedded in every aspect of our lives, from the cars we drive to the construction of the buildings we work in. Welding, sheet metal fabrication and engineering industries require well-trained people capable of operating a broad range of welding equipment in a variety of techniques.
Throughout this apprenticeship, you will benefit from a mix of classroom learning and practical work which will teach you how to fuse together different metals using appropriate welding and fabrication techniques.
Welding and fabrication is a skilled profession, that requires high levels of accuracy and commitment to quality workmanship.
APPRENTICE
Mechanical Engineer

The field of engineering concerns the application of science and mathematics to solve real-world problems. Engineering is involved with every part of the creation process, from research and design to production and testing.
Every engineer may contribute something different as part of a team. However, all engineers require good communication skills, creativity, and collaborate effectively to be successful.
APPRENTICE
CAD Designer
CAD stands for computer-aided design. All kinds of engineering careers use CAD software to create 2D or 3D designs for buildings, products, product parts and machinery. Good problem-solving skills and an enquiring mind to solve problems. On your own, or in a team CAD Designers are effective collaborators that look at all phases of design and manufacture process. A typical day could include:
- Use 2D or 3D software to produce detailed drawings and models.
- Check drawings meet quality and technical standards.
- Communicate with engineers, designers and project staff.
- Read and interpret engineers’ drawings.
- Mathematical calculations for angles, weights and costs.
- Maintain records and issue design work.
APPRENTICE
Business Administrator
Effective administrative processes are fundamental for any successful business. This is a broad discipline that includes all aspects of overseeing business operations, ensuring processes run smoothly and efficiently on a day-to-day basis.
Through our Business Administration Apprenticeship, you will gain in-depth knowledge and skills to support a range of administrative processes across the business. This may include dealing with customer enquiries, handling timesheets, overseeing document control as well as inputting data into systems and spreadsheets.
Alongside practical experience in the workplace, you will gain theoretical knowledge through attending day release at college and work towards achieving a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration.
