Clark Door has been presented with a prestigious industry award for their recent project at Whitechapel station in central London.
Whitechapel station is undergoing a radical transformation as part of the capital’s ambitious new Crossrail service. 118km of new track will run from Reading and Heathrow in the west, through 42km of tunnels under London, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. The railway will be known as the Elizabeth line when services begin, and it is currently Europe’s biggest infrastructure project.
Clark Door designed, manufactured and installed 2 large acoustic doors in the station’s new Durward Street ventilation shaft. The doors provide a high level of sound insulation to prevent noise from the shaft’s ventilation fans from reaching the station above, in addition to being fire rated to 60 minutes, and capable of withstanding a high air pressure load in either direction. The doors measure 4.8m wide by 7.2m high, and 6m wide by 8m high respectively, with the largest door weighing in excess of 10 tonnes.
BBMV, a joint venture between Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall, Vinci Construction and BeMo Tunnelling, and Crossrail’s major contractor, awarded Clark Door their Supply Chain Quality Award in June 2018. BBMV’s Project Director, was impressed by Clark Door’s pre-installation planning, which included a trial assembly of the doors in factory conditions, and their commitment to going the extra mile to meet the project’s stringent requirements of design approval, quality and safety.
