Mareel can claim fame to being the UK’s most northerly cinema and music venue! Designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects for the Shetland Arts Development Agency, Mareel sits comfortably on the edge of Hay’s Dock in Lerwick, overlooking the Bressay Sound. The consultant was Arup Venue Consulting, and the main contractor was Shetland based construction Company DITT Construction Ltd.
The venue consists of three floors housing two cinema screens, a multi-use auditorium, recording studio, dance studio/rehearsal rooms, a digital media production suite, broadcast facilities and a café/bar incorporating additional performance areas. The main performance auditorium has a standing capacity of approximately 650 and a seated capacity of 250, with a balcony seating a further 85 people. The main cinema has a seated capacity of 160 with the smaller second cinema seating 40.
Clark Door was awarded the contract to supply and install the Rw40dB acoustic stage doors and the single and double leaf steel hinged doors. The acoustic doors were installed according to the client’s requirements and the Clark Door installation team were given 5 out of 5 for the work on site.
